Description
Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that removes nasal polyps and sinus inflammation.
Facts
- General anesthesia
- One-day surgery
- Procedure takes about 90 minutes
- Recovery in 3 weeks
Surgery of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity is considered for:
- Nasal polyps (growths of the mucous membrane)
- Inflammation of the sinuses (chronic sinusitis)
- Congested nose due to anatomical abnormalities
- Abscesses (inflammation of the sinuses with purulent discharge)
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, its advantage is the operation under visual control (endoscopic camera) and a mini-invasive approach without external incisions and scars with faster healing.
After surgery, a tamponade is inserted into the nasal cavity for 7 days, so breathing is possible only through the mouth.
The swelling persists for several days, the patient may feel pressure in the sinuses. Discharge mixed with blood may flow from the nose. Complete healing of the mucous membrane takes 3-5 weeks.
