Tonsils are most often removed when they are excessively enlarged (tonsillar hypertrophy) or when they are repeatedly inflamed - tonsillitis.
The reason may also be long-term (chronic) inflammation and obstructive sleep apnea (blockage of the airways by tonsils) and peritonsillar abscesses (purulent inflammation).
